Choose the Perfect Spot for Your New Shed

Planning for your new backyard shed is a lot of fun

One of the most important decisions is deciding where to locate your new shed. Not only will it have a big impact on the aesthetics of your backyard, it will also determine how convenient it is for you to use your new shed.

Putting your shed in the wrong place can also create some headaches such as needing to move your shed to a new spot later, or risking getting fined by your city or HOA.

Here are a few of the most important considerations:

It’s a fact of human behavior:  We gravitate towards convenience. The more conveniently that your shed is located in the backyard, the more frequently you’re going to use it.

If you’re like many of our customers, you take pride in your backyard. It’s worth taking a minute to visualize what your shed will look like in different areas of your backyard. Keep in mind that we can customize the layout of your shed’s doors and windows to create the best overall effect.

Every city has its rules for where your “accessory building” (your shed) can be placed in relation to your property line. In addition, there may be easements or other specific features of your property that determine where you can legally position your new shed. If you’re not familiar with getting a permit for your shed, ask your Ulrich designer for help.

If your building is built in our factory and delivered to your backyard fully assembled, make sure we’ve got plenty of room to access your backyard. Keep in mind that both width and height clearance are essential. Low-hanging branches or power lines can create delivery headaches. If we are constructing your new shed in your backyard (an on-site build), remember that our construction crews need adequate space around the perimeter of your building during construction.

This might seem like a lot of factors to keep in mind, but don’t worry.

We’ve created a handy checklist to help you put your shed in the perfect spot.
