Teresa Maisonet-Menendez has a demanding job. She works as a special education teacher in the Lake Travis ISD. It’s important for her to have a peaceful place where she can relax and recharge in order to be ready for her students the next day. For Teresa, the garden is that place. She’s a whimsical gardener, not confined to the traditional notions of what a garden can, and cannot have. Bottles take the place of traditional edging, and a pig shaped Thai grill rests peacefully on top of a small wine cabinet. The smaller size meant replacing the standard double doors with a custom single door. That way she could still have a 2×3 ft window on the front of her building. Poor ventilation could result in damages to your belongings and the structural integrity of the building itself. Think about your hobbies and interests. You don’t want to go through the hassle of replacing it, and you want to get the most out of your investment currently. Sheds should always come with a warranty to ensure good quality. The old way of thinking was that sheds did not add value to your home. Flooring, Roof, and Walls Hardboard, Masonite, and Flap Board siding are all susceptible to buckling or warping. Generally, you should avoid these materials, especially if you experience high moisture conditions. You can particularly see the effects in the edges and joints of your shed over time. Engineered siding such as LP Smartside or Smart-Lap is much more durable and can be sealed for further protection. Furthermore, in the colder to milder weather climates, vinyl siding is easy to care for and can last for 20 years with the over-sub sheathing application, unless in hotter climates which affects its performance due to warping and deterioration. Sometimes, plywood or other cheap materials are used for the walls, which can buckle over time. High-quality lumber is more practical for structure because of its rigidness. Low-quality walls mean more painting and the risk of wearing down, and ultimately risking the protection of your valuables. Proper rafter spacing and roof sheathing ensure long-term roof durability. Poorly constructed roofs with cheap roof materials can sag over time. Shingles are something to consider as well. Avoid 3-tab shingles because they do not last long and often have a limited warranty. Residential shingles are a much better option; these are standard shingles you see on most houses and come with a better warranty and offer better protection. These shingles are also standard on all Ulrich buildings. Can I DIY My Shed? You can DIY your shed. However, it’s less of an investment and less stressful when considering the money spent and time spent buying a constructed shed built by professionals. You can also add more style and customizations when you opt for a builder. Companies usually buy their materials in bulk, meaning it’s more reasonable for them to build the shed than yourself as an individual, who would have to factor in transportation (see the next section for more details) and material and tool cost. You won’t have to worry about extra materials, and generally, sheds last longer when professionals build them. Therefore, you won’t have to spend more time and money repairing them. In short: it’s more cost-effective to get a professional. Especially if you value your time, consider not DIYing your storage shed. 14×36 Man-Cave — A retreat for a “hair-ied” former sheriff Former Sheriff Paul Hensley has retired off the beat and off the grid. After 31 years of working as a sheriff in rural Virginia, Sheriff Hensley has made his home in a man-cave. And he’s even sprouted his beard celebrating his move away from “normal” to “natural.” Paul’s daughter is living in his log house not too far away. But Paul likes to call this 14×36 man-cave from Byler Barns & Backyards his home. He designed and had it built in the fall of 2015, and is now one year into living there. It’s made of pine board and batten, with insulated windows and doors. The walls aren’t insulated yet — that’s still coming. He plans to insulate the building, and then line it with native wood from trees off his home place. He’ll be using a variety–oak, hickory, pine, and maple–to give the interior an artistic touch. He heats his man-cave with a wood stove. Even with uninsulated walls, he can still get his home cooking to 80 degrees in the winter with his little stove. And speaking of cooking — he does that as well on his stove. Whether that is getting a structure with climate control capabilities or getting a structure that will require less maintenance and be more durable, there’s usually an upgrade or feature that will address it. Getting a new shed can be very exciting and making sure that shed is exactly what you need is incredibly important. When shopping for a custom shed, usually there are loads of upgrades and options you can select from. AC & Heating Adding some sort of climate control or AC/heating system is usually a simple process and can greatly improve the usability of your structure. If you are hoping to spend long periods of time or use your shed daily, you may want to consider installing this system. Depending on cost, you can install a simple window unit or even a full mini split unit to control the temperature. Radiant Barrier Radiant barrier is a product that can be used in many construction environments and is commonly used in attics to help reduce cooling costs. This can be added to your structure in conjunction with a cooling system to really maximize the temperature control, or alone to absorb the sun rays and reduce the interior temperature by up to 30 degrees. This can be helpful if you live in a hot climate and are worried about your items being exposed to the extreme heat or want to maximize the climate control with your AC/heating system without having to install traditional insulation. 3. Additional Windows & Doors When building a custom shed, usually you have the capability to add additional doors and windows and select different sizes and styles. This can be super useful depending on what you intend to use your shed for. If you are storing multiple lawn tools and mowers you may need a larger door to fit through. You may be transforming your shed into an art studio and want ample natural light so you would opt for plenty of windows and maybe even a door with built in windows. If you plan to use part of the structure for storage and part for a workshop you may want to consider a garage roll up door and a normal man door as well. 4. Interior Finish Out A full finished interior is sometimes more difficult to find offered, but if it is an option it is a great upgrade if you are wanting an outdoor space that will be used for long periods of time every day. Many choose to finish out the inside when using the structure as a home office, workspace for a small business, or even for a she-shed or man cave. The phrase “finished out” refers to the structure being insulated and interior being covered with some sort of wall and ceiling covering, and usually includes electrical and A/C in the process if you want those upgrades in your structure. This service also can include flooring if that is something needed for your project. 5. Metal Roofing Metal roofing is typically an upgrade from a shingled roof and can be worth the additional cost for various reasons. Shingled roofs are great for HOA restrictions and cohesiveness to the home on the property, but a metal roof can be less maintenance and often more durable in weather conditions. Ideally any roof you select will be warrantied, but it still is beneficial to have a roof that doesn’t give you trouble for a long time. On top of that, a metal roof can be a really appealing option if you are looking for that sleek, modern look. 6. Skirting Skirting is a common cosmetic upgrade to a shed that is up off the ground for leveling or structural reasons. It can hide underneath the structure so that it looks seamless to the ground and you don’t see the skids or whatever style of foundation your shed is on. In addition to being a cosmetic improvement on a shed, it also can aid in keeping animals or insects out from underneath the shed by blocking off the space underneath the flooring system. 7. Shelving & Workbenches Built-in shelving and workbench space can be a really convenient option for an upgrade in your shed. If the shed is going to be used for storage or even as a workshop or craft room, having these items built is a great way to have a sturdy solution without having to find your own shelving and making sure it will fit in the structure. Usually these work benches and shelving are built and attached to the walls which maximizes interior space by having them flush to the wall. 8. Loft Space Most shed customers are looking to get a shed for storage purposes, but a good portion of those customers also would like the additional uses you can get out of a shed to make sure they get their money’s worth. Adding loft space can really leverage that space to essentially create another additional level of space. The Ulrich Quote Process Most of our customers come to us and they’re just looking for a price. They’re looking for an idea of what the garage of their dreams might cost. In order to assist with that, we list all of our beginning prices on our website. We want to have transparency in pricing of where our models start at in price. The way to get an accurate price and a precise quote is for us to learn more about you, find out more about your project, where it’s going to be built, what type of materials we’re going to use, how many windows, how many doors, etc. That will allow us to give you a more accurate quote for the end result that you would like to see. We do that in two ways: One is a design consultation. There is no charge for the design consultation. We want to learn more about you, more about your project, and then we will take that information into account to give you somewhat of a ballpark price of what you might expect to pay for what you’re wanting to build. From there, we would further refine that by doing a design session. We would make some more finite decisions about which garage doors you would like, what size would you like to settle on? And then from that information, we’re able to derive a more accurate quote, purchasing docs, and an actual written quote for you the client. With that information, then you have an accurate depiction of exactly what you want and exactly what it would cost to build that.” What Ulrich Does For You As part of your build here at Ulrich, we take care of the dirt work. What is involved in the dirt work? Well, the dirt work includes any leveling, any site prep, any shoring up of the substrate that the garage, shop, or barn is going to sit on. That includes the engineered slab. We always build on an engineered slab. An engineered slab is, quite frankly, that the quality of the dirt is taken into consideration before the slab is designed and constructed. An engineer will look at the quality of the dirt and then tell us based on the building size exactly how the concrete needs to be shaped. The depth of the pony walls, the size of the rebar that goes in the concrete. All of those factors are taken into consideration to make sure that your building is built on a solid foundation. The good news is that, at Ulrich, we take care of all of that. So we actually deal with the entire slab, from start to finish to the top of the garage. When it comes to engineered drawings and engineered plans for city and county approval, we work directly with you, our engineers, and our design team. We ensure that we are able to produce a design and a set of plans that will be approved in a timely manner so that we can begin the project and finish the project, keeping it all on schedule.

We’ve all seen the commercial showing Victor and Cheryl standing outside watching Cheryl’s She Shed burn to the ground. Cheryl’s on the phone with Zachary, her State Farm agent, waiting to find out if her building is covered. Thankfully, it is. What about your She Shed? Or garage, garage, pool house, or plain ol’ storage building? Are you doing all you can to protect your investment in a sound structure, whatever you may use it for? Whether fire, storm, or flood, here are a few ways to protect your outdoor storage building. Know what the warranty covers The first line of defense when it comes to protecting your outdoor storage building is your warranty. Shed warranties vary from one company to the next and cover everything from nothing to, well, everything. And all that’s in between. When you’re shopping for a new shed, ask questions. Does the warranty cover materials and workmanship? What about accidents? If it were hit by lightning, as Cheryl’s She Shed was, would your warranty cover it? You also want to know how long the warranty lasts. If the siding started buckling after a year, you need to know if the company will fix it. What about three years? Is it still covered? This may vary not just from company to company but from one building line to another within the same company. Properly maintain your building The second best way to protect your outdoor storage building is proper maintenance. Make sure the ground drains properly so that water doesn’t enter the building. If hail tears the shingles, replace them. Wash the vinyl siding, fix the torn screen, do the things that responsible homeowners do. Shed maintenance will include different tasks depending on the season of the year. For instance, in the fall you’ll want to remove any wet or damp recreational equipment like life preservers and fishing poles. In fact, it’s not a bad idea to empty all the contents and sweep out the inside. You’ll also want to rake leaves and debris away from the building, inspect the roof before the first snow, and check the doors and windows for gaps or leaks. In spring, you’ll again want to inspect for leaks in the roof, give it a fresh coat of paint inside and out or scrub the siding, and repair any tears in your screens. Protect your outdoor storage building with homeowner’s insurance Many homeowners never give their insurance a second thought after purchasing it. Yet, unless you update your policy when you make home improvements or add items like a woodstove, you may find yourself underinsured. “When you make significant improvements to your home,” says Stacy Webb, sales executive with Bankers Insurance in Staunton, Virginia, “it’s always a good rule of thumb to let your agent know.” The same goes for adding or replacing an outdoor storage building. Webb says that most people have coverage that includes extras like private structures up to 10 percent of the coverage for the home. For instance, if your home is covered for $300,000, your contents and outdoor buildings would be covered for up to $30,000. The contents of your shed are covered under the policy’s provision for the contents of your home, according to Webb. “There’s an exception to that,” he says, “that you need to check on. That is the limits for one particular item.” If your policy sets limits on the coverage of any one particular item, and you own something that exceeds those limits, then you need to have them added, or scheduled to, the policy. An example often found in outdoor storage buildings would be a zero-turn lawnmower. If your ‘one particular item’ limit is $2,500 and your mower cost $6,000, you want to schedule it separately on your policy. Renters face a different set of circumstances. You may rent your home and the landlord gave permission for you to erect a She Shed in the backyard. Just as the landlord’s insurance won’t cover the contents of your rented home, it won’t cover your shed either. “If you have a renter’s policy,” says Webb, “let your agent know you’re adding a shed.” Adding an outdoor storage building, gazebo, or garage to your property is a big investment.
